Archives Staff Excursion

he staff of the Archives of Yugoslavia visited the Archives of Srem in Sremska Mitrovica, the Srem Museum, Sirmium and the ethno village of Stanišići in the Republic of Srpska on 25th June 2010.
At the Archives of Srem we were welcomed by Dejan Mostarlić, Director of the Archives, and his associates. We shared our experience in preserving, processing and organizing archival material. The building of the Archives was built at the end of the 18th century and presents protected cultural heritage which, after several renovations, has been completely adapted to the needs of the Archives.
There are a lot of traces of Roman civilization on the territory of Serbia, one of them being Sirmium. This ancient town, located in present day Sremska Mitrovica, was one of the four capitals of the Roman Empire. The Srem Museum discloses the fascinating world of objects found on excavation sites of Sirmium. Particularly significant are the tombstones found there. 

The spirit of the past followed us to the ethno village of Stanišići as well. Old, authentic huts adorn the place with its archaic features.  The centre of Stanišići boasts a lake, and in it the reflection of the luxurious hotel dominating the village. The past, remains of ancient civilization, the beauty of the landscape at the outbreak of summer, meetings and companionship made this excursion worthwhile to remember.
