Under the general law on state archives, the STATE ARCHIVES OF THE FPRY was formed on January 21, 1950. The Archives changed its name on several occasions, but it is best known by its present name ie. Archives  of  Yugoslavia. The Archives is in charge of collecting, keeping, organizing, processing and making available for use archival holdings created in the work of institutions of the Yugoslav state (since its foundation in 1918 until its breakup in 2006) and some persons.

Cooperation of the Archives with similar institutions, both in the country and abroad, was established based on the natural need to exchange experience in order to accept positive initiatives, experience and practice of others.
