1st September – Non-Aligned Day

2025-09-01 Category: Other

By the decision of the Government of the Republic of Serbia, 1st September is observed as Non-Aligned Day, in remembrance of 1st September, 1961, when the First Conference of Heads of State or Government of Non-Aligned Countries began its work in Belgrade. On this occasion, we emphasize that the archival materials of the First Conference of Heads of State or Government of Non-Aligned Countries were inscribed in May 2023 in UNESCO’s “Memory of the World” Register, as a joint nomination of Indonesia, India, Egypt, Algeria, and Serbia.

Furthermore, in 2011 and 2021, on the occasions of the fiftieth and sixtieth anniversaries of the First Conference of Non-Aligned Countries, the Archive organized the exhibition “The First Conference of Heads of State or Government of Non-Aligned Countries, Belgrade 1961” in three languages (Serbian, English, French). The catalogue of this exhibition can be downloaded in PDF format from the official website of the Archives of Yugoslavia.

We also emphasize that the Archive has contributed to the study of non-alignment through a series of collections of documents on the bilateral relations of Yugoslavia with Non-Aligned countries, including Indonesia (two collections), Algeria, Morocco, Iran, and Egypt.
